The Northern California section of AIChE will host its 42nd Annual Symposium, "Hydrogen Economy and Fuel Cells: Challenges and Opportunities for Chemical Engineers". This symposium brings industry leaders in fuel cell and hydrogen technologies together in one location.  Exhibitors will discuss how their products can help the world's engineering communities succeed.  This one-day symposium is an excellent opportunity for engineers and scientists not directly involved with fuel cells to meet leaders in the field, and to learn about the challenges associated with the hydrogen economy and fuel cell technologies.

The morning sessions of the Symposium will address the salient aspects of the hydrogen economy.  Prof. Daniel Sperling (Director, Institute of Transportation Studies, and Professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering, and  Environmental Science and Policy at UC Davis) is the opening technical speaker.  Prof. Sperling will be followed by industrial experts giving talks on Hydrogen Production, Hydrogen Storage, and Transportation and Distribution of Hydrogen.

At lunch time, Mr. Bob Therkelsen (Executive Director, California Energy Commission) will talk about the Hydrogen Economy and Energy Policy Issues.

The afternoon sessions will begin with an overview of fuel cell technology by Prof. Elton Cairns, an internationally known expert in the field of electrochemical engineering.  This will be followed by a number of talks by experts from industry about specific fuel cells.

We will also be hosting a Trade Show Exhibition in the adjoining exhibition area.  At the Exhibition, companies engaged in the field of hydrogen and fuel cells will exhibit their products and technologies.  This is a unique opportunity to learn about the full range of industrial activities in the area of fuel cells and hydrogen from a number of vendors active in the fields of production, storage, distribution and transportation of hydrogen and fuel cells.

On display at the symposium will be a Ford Focus FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle).  The hydrogen powered Ford Focus FCV produces zero emissions from the tailpipe. A Ballard fuel cell engine, which converts chemical energy into electrical energy using hydrogen and oxygen, powers the vehicle's electric-drive motor, producing only water and heat as by-products. Fuel-cell technology is projected to provide up to two times the fuel economy of gasoline and diesel engines.

Continental breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks will be provided.
