Dave Flanaghan: Fuel Cells in Transportation

UTCFC has been developing fuel cells for over 40 years. Its fuel cells are located at a number of locations around the globe and have flown to the Moon and back. Today, like many automotive manufacturers, UTCFC is focusing its Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell technology towards transportation applications to reduce the world’s dependence on oil and reduce air pollution.

UTCFC has been developing fuel cells for automobiles and buses since 1998. Fuel cells are very flexible. They can be used for primary traction, battery hybrid applications, and on-board auxiliary power. The fuel cell technology has made great strides in improving power output, size reduction, reliability and life, however, many challenges still remain.

The presentation will cover fuel cell advancements at UTCFC, an overview of several on-going vehicle programs, and obstacles that must be overcome before fuel cell vehicles will be available for every day use.
