May 2007 South Bay Meeting Notice
Biodiesel Production in Silicon Valley
Biodiesel is gaining a strong foothold in the alternative fuels market and is seen by many as a viable alternative to foreign oil dependence as well as a way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Biodiesel can be made from waste greases and oils and is thus a recycled fuel source in limited quantities. Overall, using biodiesel in existing diesel engines provides some clear benefits compared to petroleum diesel. However, biodiesel has drawbacks including higher NOx and more soot and other particulate emissions compared to gasoline. Walt Bacharowski of Silicon Valley Biodiesel will be giving a talk on the sources, conversion chemistry, and use of biodiesel as well as the status of local biodiesel production. Silicon Valley Biodiesel is currently building a commercial scale biodiesel production facility. The meeting is in room 285/287 of the SJSU Engineering Building located on the north side of the campus on the corner of San Fernando St (runs east to west) and Paseo Ceasar Chavez (parallel to and between 4th and 10th streets). Parking is free after 6PM. Reservations requested by End of Day Thursday, May 3. Please contact the AIChE Nor Cal South Bay Director at southbay@aiche-norcal.org for any questions. Menu |
