Engineering Crops for Fuel

The use of crops for fuel is gaining importance today due to the increasing global demand for energy. Recent legislation in the US has mandated that certain percentages of domestically used fuel come from crop sources and the percentage is likely to increase in the future. However, since growing crops requires energy and land, which are both in limited supply, it is critical to maximize the potential energy yield per plant. Plant biology research is playing a key role in this.

Dr. Chris Somerville, Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of the Department of Plant Biology at Stanford University, will be discussing his research at this meeting. His research is focused on understanding how plants produce cellulose, which is directly related to their production of biomass available for fuel. His department is in the forefront of understanding how to best optimize plant genetics for future high energy yielding crops.

From an engineering standpoint, as new crops are introduced into the biofuel market, there will be new processing methods to develop. The more thoroughly engineers understand these upcoming challenges, the better prepared they will be to meet the opportunity.

The meeting is in room 285/287 of the SJSU Engineering Building located on the north side of the campus on the corner of San Fernando St (runs east to west) and Paseo Ceasar Chavez (also known as 7th St). Parking is free after 6PM at the San Fernando and 4th street city garage. There is a university parking garage on San Fernando and 10th that costs $5 after 5:30PM.

Reservations requested by End of Day Tuesday, June 19.
